Flexible working

At MI6 flexible working arrangements vary by role. Due to the sensitive nature of our work, we are unable to offer home working, but that does mean that you really can leave your work at work. Any flexible working arrangements are always subject to business need. We encourage you to review the specific flexible working options listed in each job description.

Types of flexible working we can offer

  • Flexible working: a catch-all term to describe a range of work arrangements that allow employees to adjust their working hours or patterns.
  • Remote working: an arrangement where employees perform their duties outside the main office, but excluding home working.
  • Flexitime: a system that allows employees to vary their start and finish times, in accordance with business area policy, as long as they complete a set number of hours per week.
  • Compressed hours: working the same number of hours in fewer days, such as a 4-day working week with longer daily hours.
  • Job sharing: an arrangement where two or more employees share the responsibilities of one full-time role.
  • Part-time working: an arrangement where employees work fewer hours than a full-time schedule, often spread across fewer days.
  • Hybrid working: a blend of office-based and home-based working, where employees spend part of their time working from the office and part from home, as set out by MI6 in accordance with business need.
  • Term-time working: an arrangement where employees only work during term-time.
