SIS is recruiting across all roles in its workforce. The agency has always attracted talent, but in order to remain one of the best intelligence services in the world, we need to harness talent from the widest possible range of backgrounds.

Last year SIS launched a bold new cinema advertising campaign. On Thursday 24 May, SIS will launch their first television advert, #secretlywerejustlikeyou, during the Channel 4 evening news. The advert looks to dispel some misconceptions of the Service and provide viewers with an understanding of the skills required to be an Intelligence Officer.

SIS was recently listed in the Times Top 50 Employers for Women and in the Top 100 Race Employer, and in the Guardian 300 this year SIS were ranked the 4th most popular graduate recruiter overall by gender, ethnicity and by socio-economic background.

However, some still believe that to join SIS a candidate needs to be from a certain type of background, or that SIS is not conducive to those with families for example. We like to show the public that this is not the case, because #Secretly, we're just like you.

Intelligence Officers are at the front line of SIS operations. We want to attract candidates who are able to perform three functions over the course of their career:

  • The Targeter identifies individuals who may have access to secret information and who might be willing to work with us as agents.

  • The Case Officer cultivates, builds and manages relationships with agents.

  • The R Officer works with customers to ensure our intelligence is relevant and validated.

It is not easy to define what an Intelligence Officer looks like- there is no "standard officer".
Some of the key things we look for are: emotional intelligence, excellent interpersonal skills, a public service ethos, mental sharpness, an interest in foreign affairs and cultures, a desire to live and work overseas, curiosity, influencing skills, sound judgement, integrity, team working and being technologically savvy.

To be eligible to be an Intelligence Officer candidates must be British, 21 or over and hold a 2:2 degree or higher. Many of our candidates have several years of work experience in another sector.
